Architectural Preservation

Bernal Heights has a range of building types -- Victorians, small cottages, and contemporary homes. Many of the older buildings are at risk of demolition for development; it is important to survey the neighborhood and identify those that are of historic interest, whether they be homes, businesses, or public buildings. Bernal Heights Preservation celebrates every building in Bernal, large and small.
Survey the neighborhood. Please join with BHP to find out more about the buildings, parks, and streets of the neighborhood!
Teach and learn. BHP serves as a valuable resource for those who want to learn more about the history of their home or their street.

Historical Photographs and Maps

Old photographs, maps (atlases, road maps, etc), and papers (newspapers, ticket stubs, letters, advertisements, church bulletins, real estate documents, etc) show how the neighborhood has changed over time. BHP is working with the Bernal Heights Branch Library and the SF History Center at the Main Library to create an archive on Bernal Heights. BHP would lik e to make copies of any items that residents may have so that everyone can enjoy these important treasures.
Share your photos. Help create this neighborhood archive by letting us copy some of your own family photos!
Use your computer skills. We need help scanning items and creating a database.

Become an interviewer. Would you like to participate as an interviewer? We have a training packet, useful f or the experienced and the novice interviewer.
Share your recording equipment. We need video and sound recording equipment.
Do you like to type? We may need help transcribing interviews.
