Architectural Preservation
Bernal Heights has a range of building types -- Victorians, small cottages, and contemporary homes. Many of the older buildings are at risk of demolition for development; it is important to survey the neighborhood and identify those that are of historic interest, whether they be homes, businesses, or public buildings. Bernal Heights Preservation celebrates every building in Bernal, large and small.- Survey the neighborhood. Please join with BHP to find out more about the buildings, parks, and streets of the

Teach and learn. BHP serves as a valuable resource for those who want to learn more about the history of their home or
their street.
Historical Photographs and Maps
Old photographs, maps (atlases, road maps, etc), and papers (newspapers, ticket stubs, letters, advertisements, church bulletins, real estate documents, etc) show how the neighborhood has changed over time. BHP is working with the Bernal Heights Branch Library and the SF History Center at the Main Library to create an archive on Bernal Heights. BHP would lik e to make copies of any items that residents may have so that everyone can enjoy these important treasures.- Share your photos. Help create this neighborhood archive by letting us copy some of your own family photos!
- Use your computer skills. We need help scanning items and creating a database.
Oral History BHP wants to identify people to interview about the everyday experiences of living in Bernal Heights-those who grew up h ere in the early 20th century, who moved here later in life, or who played a role in shaping the neighborhood.

- Share your recording equipment. We need video and sound recording equipment.

If you have memories and photographs to share, our group will help make them a part of neighborhood history. If you're interested in learning more about the history of Bernal Heights, your home or street, or any part of the neighborhood, our group is the place to start, to share information, or to build on our "local knowledge." If you have skills in digital media, interviewing, or historical research, we need you as an advisor or active participant.* Come to our meetings at the Bernal Heights Branch Library, 500 Cortland Avenue, San Francisco.
